Home Sweet Home
University Final Project
From Concept to Camera

This documentary was created for a final year university project by myself and a few colleagues. We collaborated on every aspect, from developing the storyline and identifying key themes to conducting interviews and capturing footage. The technical side involved filming, editing, and producing a cohesive narrative that effectively conveyed the family's story and the broader Mica crisis. This project not only honed my technical production skills, like camera work, sound, and editing, but also deepened my understanding of storytelling, teamwork, and time management. Being involved in every stage of the production process gave me a well-rounded experience and reinforced my passion for documentary filmmaking. It also taught me the importance of empathy and giving a voice to those whose stories need to be heard.
"Home Sweet Home" uncovers the emotional journey of a Northern Irish family grappling with the Mica housing crisis. After discovering their home was built with faulty bricks, they were forced to relocate to temporary accommodation. The documentary follows their struggle and resilience, featuring insights from experts and coverage of a government conference on the crisis. Despite the upheaval, the family discovers that the true meaning of "home" lies in being together. This powerful story showcases their resilience and hope as they await the reconstruction of their house, emphasizing that a home is more than just bricks and mortar.
